Self-Awareness Meaning

Self-Awareness Helps You Avoid Regret

A lot of people who lack self-awareness talk about living with no regrets and then go out and do stuff that is purely physical or superficial and doesn’t really help them grow as human beings. As you build your self-awareness, you’ll realize that physical or superficial pursuits are not the things that really matter in life, what people actually regret are things like:

  • Not having deep relationships with others.
  • Not saying, “I Love You,” more often to their loved ones.
  • Not pursuing their dreams.
  • Not having the courage to live life as themselves.
  • Not taking the time to work on the issues that held them back in life.
  • Not admitting mistakes.
  • Not being in touch with their emotions.
  • Not treating themselves and others well.
  • Not making the world a better place.
  • Not making life easier for others.
  • Not behaving with kindness and empathy toward all people.
  • Not letting go of fear.

You’ll notice that these types of regrets don’t have anything to do with superficial gratification, living recklessly, or being hooked on adrenaline, they refer to the quiet moments when we have to face who we are as people and decide whether we did everything in our power to live meaningfully.

Self-awareness allows you to live on a deeper level, where you understand what really matters in life rather than trying to fill yourself up with temporary placebos. It’s a way of living that goes below the surface and brings you greater satisfaction.

What will you do to develop self-awareness and avoid regrets in your life?

Self-Awareness Consulting and Being Serious about Change

self-awareness consulting is only effective when you’re serious about change. A lot of people go to a professional thinking that it’s a quick fix or that they have some magic formula that will instantly create success or fulfillment. The only way to live your dream life is to consciously decide to take charge of your thoughts, emotions and behaviors and move in a positive direction. self-awareness consulting can help you become happier and healthier by:

  • Offering a professional, outside perspective.
  • Providing caring support.
  • Helping you clarify your strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Building accountability.
  • Monitoring your progress.
  • Cheering you on.
  • Believing in you.
  • Helping you decide what you want to do in life.
  • Getting to know yourself on a deeper level.

For self-awareness consulting to be effective it requires a highly motivated, courageous person who is willing to look at his or her warts and make significant changes. I advise people to only consider self-awareness consulting when they are ready to take on the most difficult challenges in their lives, the stuff they don’t want to look at. Otherwise they’re setting themselves up for failure and disappointment. How serious are you about change?

I love working with creative, kind, open-minded individuals who are serious about finding out who they are, welcoming change and living authentically.

Self-Awareness and Going Beyond

Self-awareness means going beyond your comfort zone and connecting with who you are deep inside instead of living superficially. It’s easy to become used to thinking and behaving a certain way, especially when things are going well. If you’re continuously building self-awareness, you understand that there is no such thing as living statically. Life is an ongoing evolution where you naturally grow and change along the way. Going beyond means you do thing like the following:

  • You don’t get stuck defending negative behaviors.
  • You actively work on healing the hurts from your past.
  • You seek new information and ideas.
  • You’re open to new ways of doing things.
  • You’re comfortable with change.
  • You think and behave in ways that benefit you and others.
  • You live life as the real you.

If you do these types of things, you know how great it feels to learn about yourself and expand your horizons. Building self-awareness isn’t always easy, but it is consistently rewarding because you get to live a genuine and authentic life. What will you do to keep going beyond the average?

Self-Awareness Means Looking at Yourself

Self-awareness means looking at yourself because you want to live consciously instead of reacting to the things going on inside or around you. It’s very difficult to create forward momentum in your life if you’re not willing to look at your strengths and areas for improvement. Here are some questions to ask yourself to help you examine who you are:

  • What are some things you do well?
  • What are some things about yourself you would improve?
  • What does it feel like to be fulfilled?
  • What does it feel like when things don’t go so well?
  • Which of your thoughts, feelings and behaviors have led to success and which ones have led to less than positive results?
  • What one thing would you change today if you could?
  • What brings you deep joy in life?
  • What things do you find meaningful?
  • What would you be doing right now if you were living authentically?

Your answers to these questions will help you take a look at yourself and begin to understand what makes you think, feel and do the things you do. The key to self-awareness is to live consciously rather than reactively. The more you know yourself, the easier it is to live meaningfully. What will you do to take a deeper look at yourself?

Self-Awareness Leads to Emotional Intelligence

When you have a high level of self-awareness you naturally build up your emotional intelligence because you’re able to:

  • Feel your full range of emotions.
  • Think of emotions as a natural part of life.
  • Be in touch with the four basic emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, and fear.
  • Be comfortable when other people show their emotions.
  • Value and appreciate being touchy-feely.
  • Heal your own emotional wounds.
  • Be conscious of your emotions instead of letting them rule you unconsciously.
  • Use your emotions to move toward positive results.
  • Use your emotions to build a better world.

A huge part of self-awareness is being so comfortable with your emotions that you do positive things for yourself and others. So many problems occur because people don’t have any emotional intelligence, imagine what the world would be like if people knew what to do with their sadness, anger, and fear. Self-awareness leads to emotional intelligence because once you know yourself well, you naturally are comfortable with the amazing range of emotions that are part of you.

Why Are People Not Self-Aware?

Why are people not self-aware? Because they’ve never been taught how to be or had an example in their lives of how to do it. When you’ve never been exposed to something, your likelihood of knowing anything about it is nil. In my experience, the vast majority of people have only the most basic self-awareness; they understand that they’re alive and that they want certain things but not much beyond that. The key to developing deeper self-awareness is to do things like the following:

  • Discover who you really are deep inside and follow your true path in life.
  • Heal your hurts so they won’t affect how you treat yourself and others.
  • Learn how your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors affect you and others and do everything in your power to move them in a positive experience.
  • Be comfortable in your own skin.
  • Be truly happy because you’re living a kind, honest, deeply fulfilling life from your very core.
  • Treat people with empathy and compassion.
  • Make the world a better place.

Self-awareness doesn’t just happen, it requires moving past the basics of simply existing to living a life of consciousness and deliberateness. You’ll know you’re self-aware when you no longer just barely make it through each day but rather live with great joy, kindness, and fulfillment.

Self-Awareness and Taking Action

A major element of self-awareness is understanding what motivates you and actually doing things to create positive movement in your life. I’ve consulted for and trained a lot of people over the years and I’ve noticed that there is often a disconnect between what they say they want to do and what they actually do. People mean well but very often they don’t know how to follow through to reach their goals. The missing ingredient is taking action.

In order to do anything in life it’s important to actually do stuff. If all you do is think about things, you’ll live a great imaginary life but not get a lot done in the physical world. Achievements don’t just appear out of thin air, they require deliberate and conscious effort. You have to actually move from thinking about things in your head to doing things in the outside world.

People who value self-awareness tend to understand the process of working hard each day to get to know themselves better and continue moving in the direction of their dreams. What are your thoughts on taking action?
